The Music That Made Manchester: Manchester’s Musick 1744/5 Project.

2019 will see the launch of a project to re-create the 1744/5 concert series of Manchester’s “Musick”, the earliest documented classical music series performed in the city.  Over the next two years Manchester Baroque will explore the repertoire of these Manchester Musick  programmes  of 1744/5.

Dr. Pauline H. Nobes

Artistic Director of Manchester BaroqueI am extremely grateful to the Präsidium of the Hochschule für Musik Würzburg for subsidising six months of this research.

(Für die Gewährung eines Forschungsfreisemesters gilt mein Dank dem Präsidium der Hochschule für Musik Würzburg.)

My thanks are also due to Ros Edwards, David Ledbetter, Michael Talbot and Geoff Thomason; and to our local libraries and archives:

-      Manchester Central Library, local archives and the Henry Watson Music Library, whose collection provides music for a significant proportion of our reconstructed programmes. These eighteenth-century ‘rarities’ have been made available through the Search Room at Manchester Central Library.

-      The Royal Northern College of Music (including the Fuller Maitland Collection and the Shaw Collection).
