Manchester's Messiah

Saturday 30th November is the day before the beginning of Advent and for many, a performance of Handel's Messiah is an esstential part of the pre-Christmas period.

In the first concert in what we intend to be a long term collaboration, Manchester Baroque in partnership with Manchester cathedral will perform Handel's Oratorio Messiah with a full orchestra and choir. Conductor: Christopher Stokes, Orchestral Leader: Pauline Nobes.

Like all Manchester Baroque concerts, this will be on orignal eighteenth century instruments or modern replicas, performed at the pitch and with the scale of ensemble that Handel might have recognised.

Tickets available via Eventbrite.

Tickets for concerts at St Ann’s Church are priced from £5 to £20 with discounts on some tickets for the over 65s, young people and the unwaged. Tickets for the performance of Handel’s Messiah at Manchester Cathedral are priced from £10 to £25.

Musick in Manchester

Manchester Baroque Season 2019-20 Opening Concert

275th anniversary of the first Manchester subscription series concert, 1744/45

The reconstruction of the 1744/45 concert series represents part of a current research project being undertaken by Dr. Pauline Nobes, Artistic Director of Manchester Baroque.

Based on a uniquely detailed and what appears to be a scholarly and accurate transcript of a set of accounts of the first ever concert-giving activity in Manchester, this concert series proposes to reconstruct the 16 subscription concerts which took place between November 2nd, 1744 and August 20th, 1745. These accounts, written in a small “cyphering” account book dated Nov. 1st 1744, were published a hundred years later (in 1844) by a gentleman journalist John Harland.

There will be a free pre-concert talk on Manchester Musick given by Pauline Nobes at 6pm in St Ann's Church.

The Music that Made Manchester

Saturday February 9th 2019 marks the launch of Manchester Baroque, a new musical group for Manchester. It also marks the launch of a project to re-create the 1744/5 concert series of Manchester’s “Musick”, perhaps the earliest documented classical music series performed in the city.  Over the next two years Manchester Baroque will explore the repertoire of Manchester Musick’s  programmes  of 1744/5.

The  launch concert takes place at 7.30 pm in St. Ann’s Church in the City Centre and will comprise of music by Vivaldi, Corelli, all ending with Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto Number 5.

This is a fitting way to start the life of Manchester Baroque, Manchester’s newest ensemble dedicated to playing on original instruments.

Manchester Baroque is committed to bringing new insights and ideas to this old music, the performance of which prefigures the growth of the great industrial city Manchester was to become.

To learn more about Manchester Baroque, Manchester Musick’s 1744/5 programme, the research being undertaken by Artistic Director, Pauline Nobes or to speak with her, please contact us via the website.
