Manchester Baroque receives Continuo Foundation funding for Martillo

We’re delighted to announce that Manchester Baroque has received funding from the Continuo Foundation for Martillo, supporting our 2027 performance of Musick in Manchester 1744/45.

The project continues Manchester Baroque’s exploration of Manchester’s remarkable musical history, drawing on the surviving programme from a subscription concert performed in the city on 30th April 1745.

Through the research of our Artistic Director, Professor Pauline Nobes, we will recreate this historic programme for audiences today, bringing together music by composers including Humphreys, Tessarini, Geminiani, Corelli, Hasse and Handel.

At the heart of the programme is Martillo, a rarely heard cantata by the neglected English composer George Hayden (c.1685–1722), offering audiences the opportunity to discover music that has been largely overlooked for centuries.

Support from the Continuo Foundation will help Manchester Baroque bring this overlooked chapter of the city’s musical history back to life, making this remarkable repertoire accessible to audiences today.
