We are delighted to welcome special guest Luke Challinor who brings his baryton, a bass string instrument from the 17th century. The instrument was already a rarity by the 18th century, however it enjoyed a brief revival with Joseph Haydn’s astonishing 175 chamber music works for this instrument, written because his employer, Prince Nikolaus Esterházy, was a passionate amateur player of the instrument. We perform three of these delightful and elegant pieces alongside other early Classical chamber works by Sammartini, Lidl and Breval.
